THE GRAMERCY PARK HOTEL:
THE REBIRTH OF A BOHEMIAN LEGEND

After four decades on the social and cultural scene—reinventing both the nightclub and hotel business by breaking all the rules—entrepreneur Ian Schrager is opening his most personal, unorthodox and wildly eccentric property yet: The Gramercy Park Hotel. The first and only hotel under Mr. Schrager’s new independent company, the Gramercy Park is an entirely new genre of hotel—one that will change the game again, raise the bar and usher in a new era of individualism where personal expression, authenticity, genuine substance and meaning are paramount. Most decidedly it is an “unhip” departure by the man who defined hip. “Previously, we created a kind of hotel that didn’t exist before. Now, however, it’s over for design hotels with their slick, spiffy, and over-styled interiors.

They have been embraced by the mainstream and become the rule rather than the exception. I felt that I had taken this as far as it could go. It was time to move on.” says Mr. Schrager. “I sensed a paradigm shift. Nothing can be ‘hip’ or ‘underground’ anymore because everything is out there instantly and goes mainstream. You can’t distinguish yourself with a brand because it is too available. It has lost its ethos and uniqueness and therefore the meaning behind it. Everyone will already have it. It ceases to be special, an alternative or subversive to the status quo. Now, the only way to distinguish yourself is to be yourself and pursue a completely personal vision…one that has no definable look, follows no rules, and is not part of any group. The Gramercy Park Hotel is the ultimate anti-brand and anti-design hotel. It is a celebration of the idiosyncratic.”

Every guest will have exclusive access to legendary Gramercy Park—the city’s only private park. A verdant enclave of venerable trees, meandering walkways, and manicured lawn, it is an unparalleled island of serenity created in 1831 by visionary developer Samuel Ruggles, who modeled it after the genteel squares of London. It’s a place for quiet reflection, a refuge sorely lacking in the frenzy of New York’s relentless grid—rimmed in architectural gems and flickering gaslights that make it feel as though you’ve stepped back in time 150 years. The mystique of this one-of-a-kind oasis carries over to another completely unique aspect of the hotel: a glamorous and lushly landscaped private Roof Club that combines all the charm of London’s private gentlemen’s clubs with the Bohemian bustle of a Viennese coffee house. It’s not merely a bar on a roof. It’s a new genre of entertainment, akin to a salon or drawing room providing the comfort, privacy, and intimacy of home. Sixteen stories above the glittering city— it represents an evolution of lobby life as a new kind of gathering place.
